Project PATROL

(Providing Advanced Technology for Real-time Officer Links) in partnership with the Washington State Crime Prevention Association

Goal
To aid in the fight against crime by providing the technology to help keep the lines of communication open between citizens, community organizations and law enforcement.

To Qualify
Organization must:

  • Be endorsed by a law enforcement agency.

  • Have an "observe and report"- only format.

  • Demonstrate that its primary function involves the need for instant communication among organization members and law enforcement.

To Apply

  • Fill out Nextel Project PATROL application and submit to Washington State Crime Prevention Association (application must include signature of endorsing law enforcement agency to be considered)

Format
Nextel will:

  • Award phones to those organizations approved and recommended by the Washington State Crime Prevention Association (based on a limited supply)

  • Program phones specifically for the organization’s communication needs

  • Provide free airtime for all 2-way and emergency local cellular calls for a period of one year

  • Provide basic initial training and ongoing support

  • Monitor appropriate use among volunteer users

Washington State Crime Prevention Association will:

  • Inform its volunteers about Project PATROL

  • Verify accuracy of all applications

  • Evaluate applications and direct Nextel as to which organizations should receive phones (based on a limited supply)

  • Track phones and help monitor appropriate use among volunteers/staff

  • Provide Nextel with program updates every 6 months

  • Keep participation waivers on file for all groups awarded phones

*NOTE: Phones are awarded to organizations based on greatest need (as evaluated by the Washington State Crime Prevention Association) for a period of one year. All past recipients must re-apply if they desire the phones for an additional year. There is no guarantee that groups previously awarded phones will receive them the following year.
