Executive Director’s Report
Daryl Pearson

February 9, 2004

The office has been very busy since the last board meeting.

Walla Walla Crime Prevention and WSCPA Office Move:
On Thursday, February 6th, the Blue Mountain Mall announced that the Crime Prevention Office would have to move to another location in the Blue Mountain
Mall. The move will require re-wiring the office for electric, data lines and other items
plus the addition of a new glass door. The total costs involved in the move are around $7,000. All remodeling costs including the electrician and new door will be picked up
by the Blue Mountain Mall. The new office will have some nice features. Vicki and I
will have some help from the Mall to paint the office. The office telephones may be
off from Tuesday until Friday at the earliest.

WSCPA Board Meeting – February 24-25. 2005:
The office is waiting for the Region 5-6 Director’s Reports and the Treasurer’s Report
so the board agendas can be mailed out. I hope to do this before the end of this week
so please send in any Agenda items you might have.

WSCPA Membership Renewals:

Since November 1, 2003 , WSCPA has had 514 members renew. We now have members from 79 different law enforcement agencies. We will be sending out second notices
to everyone before March 1st. After March 1st, any members that haven’t renewed
will be taken off the membership roles. The Sheriff’s and Police Chiefs Association
has agreed to help with our membership recruitment.

 Pasco Spring Crime Prevention Conference:
The Pasco registration flyers have been sent out to everyone. We have until April
1st to sign up on the reduced hotel rates. The conference committee is meeting on February 9th to work on a number of items including NCPC’s participation, Vendors
and Curriculum.

The national Medeco Lock Lab will be in Pasco to teach. We also have been contacted by Glenna Trout about Facing Facts but may not be able to afford her class.

NEXTEL Phone Patrol:
Nextel sent out 100 phones to over 26 different agencies. I have one phone attached
to the WSCPA office and have a phone that will be attached to the WSCPA Court Services Program. I will give this phone to
Shelby at the next meeting. I have a listing
of all phone numbers and have special permission for Gerald Abernathy to use one
of Lacey’s phones to contact the WSCPA office. This program is reported by
NEXTEL to be worth between $250,000 to $350,000 a year. This program must go
through a yearly renewal that will start in September of this year.

NCPC Regional Conference in Seattle in September:

A number of WSCPA members have spent a lot of time working for this conference. WSCPA has opened some new doors and built some very strong partnerships that
need to keep flourishing. The office is holding a number of support letters that I will
share with you at the next board meeting. In working this project I have come into
contact with a couple of people that would make excellent At Large Members to the Board and I will add this to the Board agenda.

We were semi-finalists with
Salt Lake City , Utah . Senator Hatch is a very close friend
of the Utah Council for Crime Prevention. We came under the gun to find some congressional help to bring the conference to
Seattle . I contacted Senator Murray’s
and Senator Cantwell’s  and Congressman Neterhcutt’s Offices to see if they could
help. I also emailed complete packets to Michael Parsons, Steve Rittereiser, King
County Police, Spokane Police,
Pierce County SO , Volunteers in Police Services and Citizen’s Corps. I also contacted Ron Conlin. Ron was able to connect WSCPA to
Regan Dunn and with his help to his mother Congresswoman Dunn. The last two contacts have been instrumental to this project. Regan Dunn used to head the Department of Justice Grant Funding and NCPC received several large grants while
Regan was in his position. Regan then called and expressed his opinion that
Seattle should host the conference. Congresswoman Dunn (Vice-Chair of the Homeland
Security Committee in Congress) wrote a letter of support and called Kim Dalferes
at NCPC to voice her support. On Friday, I met with Senators Murray and Cantwell
in
Pasco and I was advised that Senator Murray made a personal call of support to
Kim Dalferes and  Senator Cantwell’s Office was going to do the same.  I will be
sending out special thank you for all the people that have helped us and hope
to receive a telephone call on Monday, February 9th saying that we have the
conference. We have received a confirmation that the conference is in
Seattle .

Medeco Locks – Training Program:
The office contacted John Sekreta and were put in contact with the Lock lab in
Arlington , Virginia . We were able to schedule the lock lab for a full day of training
during the Pasco Conference and Medeco will be picking up the costs and John will
be at
Pasco for the Vendor’s Luncheon.  I hope the lock and McGruff displays will be available soon. Letters have been sent to John.

WSCPA Elections:

We need everyone that wants to run for office again to contact Shelby Chissus so we
have a full slate of officers for this upcoming election.

WSCPA Awards:
The WSCPA Newsletter will ask for nominations to be sent into the office and we
will send out an Awards and Elections flyer in the mail.

WSCPA Training:
We have a 40 Hour Basic Class in
Spokane May 3-7, and in Burien November 1-5,
2004
. These classes will be put together by Marion and the new President Elect. Jim Sawyer is trying to set up another 40 Hour Hospital Security Class for the Moses
Lake Area sometime in June or July. Dates will be sent out when the location is
found. Gerald Abernathy is putting together a 16 Hour Volunteer Class.

I have been contacted and asked to schedule both a 24 Hour First Line Supervisor’s Class and a 24 Hour Crime Prevention for Community Oriented Policing Class. I
have a couple of dates to bring to the board after we discuss whether or not to
put the classes on.

The office is receiving a number of calls on special types of crime prevention training
and I will discuss them at the next board meting.

WSCPA By-Laws:
Special attention will be given to the WSCPA By-Laws at the next Board meeting. I
ask all board members to read these. They are currently listed on the WSCPA Website. Steve Rittereiser has been charged with keeping the By-laws up to date and he has
been asked to be at the next meeting to help with the discussion on the By-Laws.
There has been a suggestion made that a committee be organized to address
updating the By Laws. There has been a request that the board discuss the
committees already outlined in the By-Laws and to see what we can do to enlist
more WSCPA members to be on the committees. This was discussed at the First
Board Meeting the last of June, 2003.

WSCPA Website:
The WSCPA Board asked me to check into a List Serve for the WSCPA Website. This was done and it comes down that we need to pay One Eighty Communications about
$20 a month to have a List Serve installed on the Website.  I was able to have one attached and we are checking out how this is working for WSCPA. At this time
without notifying anyone by email of it’s existence we have only two people signed
up. Myself and Marion Swendsen. I will work with this the rest of the month and
have it ready for the next board meeting.

WSCPA Office Volunteers:
The office has just received four new volunteers. One is Lisa from Walla Walla Communications and she will be with us until the end of the month for sure. The other three are from
Whitman College and will be working 3 hours week for the rest of the semester. They are somewhat learned in computers and will be a great help until
the end of May.
